A forbidden love...
Lucas Kemp’s twin sister died last year. He’s put aside his mourning clothes, but not his heartache. If Lucas ever needed a friend, it’s now—and who should walk in his door but Lieutenant Thomas Matlock...
Lucas and Tom are more than just best friends; they’ve been in love with each other for years. In love with each other—and pretending not to know it.
But this time, Tom’s not going to ignore the attraction between them. This time, he’s going to push the issue.
He’s going to teach Lucas how to laugh again—and he’s going to take Lucas as his lover...
"Heartbreakingly gorgeous. Tom is the most incredible hero - patient, understanding, passionate, sensitive. Lucas is so proper and stiff, his struggles so very real and poignant. I love Larkin's stories but this one is exquisite."
~ M.C.E. Top 500 reviewer
Length Shorter length novel of 48,000 words
Sensuality level A hot Regency male-male romance with sensual love scenes
Q & A with the author
Why did you write this book?
When Tom and Lucas walked onto the page in Trusting Miss Trentham (the third book in the Baleful Godmother series) I fell in love with them both. I really wanted to know their story—so I decided to write it. I’m very glad I did, because it was so much fun! Lucas is my first ever virgin hero, and I really enjoyed writing his scenes.
Claiming Mister Kemp was meant to be a novella, but it grew and grew and grew, until finally I had to admit defeat and call it a (short) novel.
How would you describe this book?
At its most basic, Claiming Mister Kemp is a friends to lovers romance, but it’s also a story about grief, and about two men finding the courage to love one another in a time when this was punishable by death. I think it’s the most emotional book I’ve ever written. Readers have told me that some scenes make them cry, which I take as a compliment!
Claiming Mister Kemp is a Baleful Godmother novel, so both Tom and Lucas have brushes with magic—even if they don’t realize it. And although this book is a companion novel to Trusting Miss Trentham it can be read as a standalone.
How would you describe your writing?
Several reviewers have likened my writing to Georgette Heyer, which is the hugest compliment ever. I adore Georgette Heyer! She’s why I write historical romance, and I reread her books over and over. (If you’ve not read The Grand Sophy, please do so!) I’ve also had readers compare my writing to Courtney Milan and Mary Balogh, which are also massive compliments.
Who would like this book?
This book will appeal to readers who love male-male romances, Regency romances, or both. Fans of KJ Charles, Joanna Chambers and Cat Sebastian should particularly enjoy it.
What order should I read the series in?
Each book, whether a novel or novella, can be read as a standalone, but many readers prefer to read them in order. And although the series is set in Regency England, a quartet of medieval novellas form the prequel.
The ideal reading order would be
The Fey Quartet (series prequel)
Maythorn’s Wish
Hazel’s Promise
Ivy’s Choice
Larkspur’s Quest
The Baleful Godmother series
Unmasking Miss Appleby
Resisting Miss Merryweather
Trusting Miss Trentham
Claiming Mister Kemp
Ruining Miss Wrotham
Discovering Miss Dalrymple
Plus three more interlinked Baleful Godmother series to come.
Happy reading!

This was an expansion of one event that actually had a plot impact in a prior book. This book did not follow the Baleful Godmother theme. It did not have an interesting plot. I could not identify with any of the characters. I found myself skipping through pages hoping something would change. I moved it to my “Scrap” folder. I will delete it from my Kindle when I figure out how.Product details

Claiming Mister Kemp Baleful Godmother Historical Romance Series Book 4 edition by Emily Larkin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The book recycles a significant amount of the preceding novel, including the device of a questionable sex act. Her knowledge of paint pigments is evident.
I normally avoid books about the paranormal, but the first book in this series, Unmasking Miss Appleby, was free, and I found it so delightful that I immediately purchased the second, Resisting Miss Merryweather. I was somewhat disappointed in that one, but decided to get the free prequel to the series, and I was enchanted once again. Trusting Miss Trentham became my favorite book, until I read this one. I don't normally read gay romance, but I'm not opposed to it, either. And this book did such a wonderful job of describing the relationship between Lucas and Tom, Lucas's fears, guilt, shame, and revulsion, that I cried for them through much of the book. I've had friends who went through some of the same torment, and one who killed herself rather than face it. This author did a fantastic job of describing the struggle they face.
Loved the point of view that the book was written so soulful and the characters seem so real that I felt all their emotions.
Emily Larkin brings me into the book and allows me to live it!
Oh my word, I thought I'd loved the previous books in this series. Lucas and Tom's story is SO well written, emotional and heart rending and so TRUE. I loved it so much I don't think I can describe it. It ties in well with with Trusting Miss Trentham and allows you to catch up with characters from the books which came before and generally gave a feel of complete and utter satisfaction when I finished it.
An amazingly different story for the time period. Lucas is such a quiet, steady, naive young man. But even with all his wealth and privilege there was no protection from pain and loss. A beautiful story of love and acceptance to two men who deserved some happiness in their lives.
Tom and Lucas have been the best of friends, but Tom hides a secret - He loves Lucas.
A M/M historical romance as Tom tries to show Lucas that they can be together even
as Lucas tries to keep their relationship secret being ashamed. But when something
happens, can Lucas come around? Great read. Adults 18+ only for steamy scenes.
I am a fan of the other books in the Baleful Godmother series because of the relatable female characters of the heroines, so I wasn't sure how I would feel about reading a novel about romance between two men. Emily Larkin's strong writing, however, makes the two protagonists very appealing and the ending provides the same emotional satisfaction as her other books do. I subtracted one star from an otherwise 5-star review for two reasons--the lack of an interesting villain to root against and because, like another reviewer, I was uncomfortable with an event early on in the relationship in which one of the parties wouldn't take no for an answer from the other (which I also don't like in more traditional romances). Nevertheless, for me, the many positive elements of the story outweighed these flaws.
